Walk a Canadian used lot in winter and the pattern is obvious: crossovers and SUVs get more attention than low-clearance sedans. That is a demand story, not a claim that one segment owns a precise share of every listing in the country.

Sedans are not "dead." Civic and Corolla examples still move when the price matches the kilometres. The buyer pool is simply narrower than it was when a family sedan was the default commuter.

Why utility vehicles took the lead

• Ground clearance and AWD matter on rural roads and in slush.
• Many crossovers now offer hybrid powertrains, so the old fuel-economy argument for sedans is weaker.

Dealers also plan inventory around what they can retail quickly. A well-kept crossover is often easier to turn than a same-year sedan with a shrinking audience.

Price against other sedans, not against SUV asking prices. Budget more marketing time. Records, tires, and an honest winter-readiness description still help.

Illustrative scenario: two 2019 vehicles reach trade-in in the same week — a mid-size sedan and a compact AWD crossover, similar kilometres. The crossover may attract more retail shoppers. The sedan may need a sharper number or a longer private listing.

Do not pay an SUV premium for features you will not use. A sedan with complete service history can be the better financial choice if your driving is urban and the price reflects weaker demand.
